This is a standard position description to be used for administrative positions with similar duties, responsibilities, classification and compensation.  Administrators assigned to the position description may or may not be assigned all of the duties identified herein. 

This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.

Part I:  Position Summary

The principal is responsible for the development and continuous improvement of a quality instructional program and to provide an emotionally and physically safe learning environment for the school community. 

Part II:  Supervision and Controls over the Work

The employee works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of the superintendent.  The employee’s work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Washington Administrative Code and Revised Code of Washington, direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as set forth in district policy. 

Part III:  Major Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Articulate and support the mission, vision, core principles and policies of the Royal School District.
  • Lead by example.
  • Articulate and model high expectations and the ability to motivate others to achieve high levels of performance.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, students, parents and other members of the community to help improve student learning using data, judgment, best practices, and problem-solving skills.
  • Distribute leadership, utilizing and growing the talents of all staff members, recognizing their professionalism.

Instruction and the Learning Environment

  • Lead a collaborative process for the development and implementation of a complex schedule including staff assignments.
  • Provide support and resources to school staff to employ effective instructional strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Analyze and interpret multiple data sources to inform school-level improvement efforts.
  • Assist staff in using data to guide, modify and improve classroom teaching and learning.
  • Foster growth, creativity, and flexibility among others using a variety of techniques.
  • Have experience, knowledge, and skill working with Washington State’s Educational Reform – Common Core, SBA,
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of technology as an essential learning tool in the classroom and overall instructional program.

Supervision and Evaluation of Personnel

  • Monitor and assist staff in implementing effective instruction and assessment practices.
  • Maintain a confidential relationship with employees regarding individual personnel matters.
  • Provide appropriate, timely, and meaningful verbal and written feedback to certified and classified staff regarding performance.
  • Demonstrate effective mentoring, coaching, and conferencing skills.
  • Develop a plan of assistance with staff when needed.
  • Support, implement, and evaluate the in-service and professional growth opportunities for staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and uphold the laws, regulations, policies, and contractual obligations related to the supervision and evaluation of school personnel including TPEP.


  • Communicate frequently and effectively, both orally and in writing, with all members of the school community.
  • Maintain high visibility with students, staff, and parents.
  • Facilitate resolution of complex interpersonal issues among others.
  • Participate as an active listener.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with students, staff, parents, and community by modeling respect, cooperation, and professionalism with others, recognizing personal achievements and professional contributions of others and demonstrating knowledge of and sensitivity toward individuals and groups.
  • Develop a school communications and family engagement plan to address important school, district, and community issues.
  • Develop a plan for reporting student progress in an ongoing and meaningful way to parents.

Management and Administration

  • Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and support for shared decision-making processes.
  • Work collaboratively with district administrators to secure resources to support the needs of your school and students.
  • Manage human resources and budgets according to district and program requirements.
  • Develop and monitor plans for the efficient and safe operation of the school facility and grounds.
  • Provide for an emotionally and physically safe learning environment for all.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and uphold all policies, procedures, regulations, laws, contractual obligations, to effectively manage the school facility and instructional program.
  • Supervise and approve the preparation and timely submission of all school reports and forms for the district office, e.g. payroll, enrollment, work orders, etc.
  • Supervise and facilitate relevant athletic, extracurricular and parent involvement activities.

Professional Preparation and Growth

  • Work cooperatively with supervisor to develop goals for personal growth and organizational improvement.
  • Participate in essential professional growth opportunities with staff and colleagues and apply new knowledge and skills.
  • Participate as a team member with colleagues, including sharing ideas and concerns.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Part IV:  Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Successful completion of an administrative certification program at an accredited college or university, and valid Washington state certification(s) and/or endorsement(s). (Out-of-state applicants must have the ability to acquire Washington State certification by the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year).
  2. Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Administration or similar field.

Part V:  Desired Qualifications:

  1. Successful academic background in staff supervision and evaluation, staff development, curriculum and instruction
  2. Successful experience as a building administrator

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, move about, hear and speak, and be visually observant of classroom behavior and learning activities.

The employee must regularly lift and carry items weighting up to 50 pounds or more and occasionally lift, restrain, or move up to 100 pounds – most typically when required to intervene in student safety issues.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning.  It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties.  The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students. The employee may be required to travel on school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
